Praying for the City: Yangon, Myanmar (Burma)

Praying for the City: Yangon, Myanmar (Burma)

Yangon is the former capital and the largest city in Myanmar with a population over 5 million. It is home to a sacred Buddhist temple covered in gold that attract many on pilgrimage. Yet it is also a place of civil war, displacement and anti-Christianity sentiment.

The Burmese, who form the largest group, make up more than half of the population. Despite hosting great diversity, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims, an ethnic minority group, have fled Myanmar since a military genocide began in 2017. The central government killed more than 6,000 people in the first month of the onslaught and has continued to enforce widespread and systematic genocide.
